1 Miniature virginal in padded case, Germany 1575 Like the harpsichord, the virginal is a keyboard instrument in which the wire strings are plucked by quill plectra when the keys are depressed. This miniature virginal may have doubled as a jewel box, since its outer case has a number of small drawers. Although a functioning instrument build by a skilled maker, it was a muscical toy, and two of its keys have no associated strings or jacks. |
