授業の目的・内容

In this first year English communication course, the aim is to build on the English students already know and use it for the purpose of communication. The emphasis will be on listening and speaking, while related reading and writing work will be assigned as homework. A coursebook will be used to provide motivating topics, as well as to review structures and increase vocabulary. Students can expect to make progress in their overall understanding of English, develop cultural awareness and gain fluency and confidence in speaking.

Introduction and Orientation;
Getting to know you; Introductory activities;
Textbook: Asking and answering questions; listening for details and taking notes; describing a painting in detail to a partner.
Symbols and their meanings; listening for information about symbols in different cultures; asking follow-up questions.
Assignment: Choose a painting or symbol from your culture to explain in class.
Discussing differences between men and women; comparing: more/ less; working in a group;
Prepare and conduct a survey in class; analyse results and present the information to the class.
Conversation tips and pair fluency practice; Listen and complete a conversation; listen and summarize a story.
Hobbies and pastimes; listen to three people talking about their hobbies; interview classmates to find out about their hobbies and interests.
10 Describing favourite food and dishes; Listen to restaurant recommendations. Grammar point: using the passive form.
11 Food and dining continued; interview classmates about their favourite restaurants.
Review for test.
12 Test! Summer assignments.
13 Describing mysterious things and places; listen to a folk-tale; act out a short drama.
14 Discuss rules and give an opinion; work in a small group to find out each person's opinion; agreeing and disagreeing. Prepare to debate.
15 Debating the pros and cons of student part-time jobs
16 Describing people; discussing friendship and qualities you like in friends; Grammar point: using if in hypothetical situations.
17 Friends: listen to a song and discuss; group work: exchange stories about childhood friends
18 Expressing wishes and giving reasons; reading a cartoon; Interview classmates about future plans and hopes.
19 Listen to people describe feelings; tell a story about a memorable moment in your life.
20 Groups: fluency practice
Presentation assignment in writing due!
21 Prepare to give a talk to the class. Listen to a song and practice for rhythm and pronunciation.
22 Present a talk to the class
23 Present a talk to the class continued.
24 Review for test.
25 Test! Wrap-up
The above may change. Additional activities of various kinds will also be used according to level and ability of actual class.

授業方法

Themes and topics will be presented in a variety of formats, audio, visual or reading. Students will study and practice the language and vocabulary and use it to carry out various tasks. Many opportunities will be given for students to speak and relate the topics to their own lives through pair and group work, as well as individual activities. Students are expected to take an active part in the class and contribute to making the class a positive and lively experience for all.
