授業の目的・内容

The main aim of this seminar is to give students opportunities to read, understand and discuss current events around the world by exposing them to authentic reading sources. We will use articles from newspapers, magazines, books, websites, and personal interviews. Students can expect to improve their reading ability through extensive practice, and develop presentation skills. In addition, they will gain a better knowledge of global and controversial issues, sharpen their critical thinking skills and increase their vocabulary.

Introduction and explanations about the course.
Getting to know you activities. Maps and quiz about global issues.
Current issues in the news. Read, research and discuss in groups.
Vocabulary building.
Political events in the world. Read, research and cite sources.
Ways of gathering information; Research and the media.
Comparing viewpoints of a news event from different regions of the world.
International Organizations and Human rights.
International Law and Crime.
Economic problems/Area studies.
10 Authority and government. Comparing systems.
11 Ethnicity and minorities.
12 Environment and natural disasters.
13 Area study: Presentations in groups
14 Presenting and discussing summer projects.
15 Areas of Conflict.
16 Cause and effects of conflict.
17 Comparing values and ways of thinking.
18 Issues in Education
19 Crime and social problems.
20 Family and the role of women.
21 Trade and enconomic issues.
22 Immigration issues and refugees.
23 Environment and conservation.
24 Traditions and Technology.

The above themes may be adjusted according to the interests of the actual class. Additional topics may be introduced by the teacher or by the students themselves.

授業方法

Material will be assigned weekly for reading. Students are expected to come to class having read the material and ready to comment, offer opinions, engage in discussions and ask questions. In class, time will be spent reading and using vocabulary worksheets, discussing in groups, making presentations and holding class debates.

成績評価の方法

Attendance, participation, presentations, research assignments, and homework are all important.

教科書

There is no required textbook. Material will be selected from various newspapers, magazines, books and websites.

参考文献

An English-English dictionary is recommended.

第1回目の授業に必ず出席のこと。

Students attending this class need to have a fair level of fluency in English in order to make the discussions lively and interesting.
