The aim of the course is for students to further improve their overall English ability, develop their listening and speaking skills, as well as to increase the vocabulary they will need in order to understand and discuss current events and issues in the news.

２	Getting to know you activities. Text: Unit 1. Video news item: Tuna fishing. Keeping a vocabulary log.
３	Unit 1. continued. Summarize the news item in your words with the key points. Research other endangered species.
４	Unit 2. Video news item: Agatha Christie, mystery writer. Life story and influences.
５	Unit 2 continued. Research and present a timeline biography of other famous persons.
６	Unit 3. Video news item: Student visas and immigration to the UK.
７	Unit 3 continued. Studying abroad. Group discussions.
８	Unit 4. Video news item: Pirates on the seas. Area study: East Africa
９	Unit 4 continued. Group discussion: crime and punishment
10	Unit 8. Video news item: Coffee shops and the economy vocabulary building: business themes.
11	Unit 8 continued. Class survey: favourite places.
12	Group presentations.

14	Set goals and schedule research projects for second semester. Unit 7. Video news item: Political protest 20 years ago.

23	Unit 10. Discussion: Bullying and related problems in Education.
24	Unit 14. Video news item: Economic Growth. Vocabulary for Economy and business.
25	Presentations of students own themes. Review of vocabulary.
26	Presentations continued. Vocabulary test.

The class is discussion based. Material will be presented in video form. Students will study the necessary vocabulary and carry out speaking tasks in pairs or in writing before viewing. Viewing will be followed by listening comprehension exercises and summary completion. Time will be devoted to discussion of the issues in each chapter, and homework will involve further reading and writing comments or researching related issues.

Attendance, in-class writing assignments, homework assignments, and end of term papers will all be important.
