授業の目的・内容

This is a current affairs course which requires both a high level of English and a keen interest in global issues. Students will be required to read in-depth articles form various news sources and do further research in order to fully grasp the background and present situation of each issue. Students will then discuss these issues in groups, give their opinions and seek solutions for them.
Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary building and acquiring a deep understanding of current issues.

Democratization - Wikileaks style
America, China and Japan - the new geopolitical balance
War zones : Iraq, Afghanistan, The Middle East and Africa.
The war against terror in Afghanistan and Yemen
Religious fundamentalism in the USA and UK and in the Muslim world.
Divided nations - China, Russia, Sudan
10 The USA - EU divide
11 Political and social divisions in America
12 Climate change - is it or isn't it?
13 Green technology
14 Recent trends in China and issues which need to be addressed
15 Global population explosion - what it means for the planet and human lives
16 India and Brazil - two democracies flexing their muscles.
17 Global poverty and hunger
18 The new slavery - human trafficking
19 Human rights' violations
20 Is Japan a real democracy?
21 AIDS, malaria and other killer diseases
22 The impact of AIDS for children, orphans, and their countries.
23 NGOs and volunteerism
24 The pursuit of happiness - a comparison of cultural conditioning between some Western and Asian societies
25 The Last Lecture - Randy Pausch - "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" - a podcast.
This is an issue based class leading to meaningful discussions, exchanging ideas and gaining insights about the world.
Students will be encouraged to become autonomous learners and contributors Vocabulary quizzes are given frequently. There is an end of semester overview quiz.
