授業の目的・内容

The primary aim of the course is to improve your skills in academic writing. The course will focus on three main areas; proper sentence construction, the structure of various types of paragraphs (e.g., narrative, descriptive, process, comparative, etc.), and the organization and writing of essays. Important secondary objectives will include using word processing software, and writing meaningfully and creatively.

Chapter 1 – Paragraph Structure - topic, supporting, concluding sentences

Chapter 2 - Unity and Coherence: Writing assignment, Chapter 3 - Supporting Details Facts versus opinions, Outside sources (plagiarism, indirect/direct quotation, & citation), Writing practice
Chapter 4 - From paragraph to Essay: Introductory paragraphs & thesis statements, Transition signals between paragraphs
Chapter 4 - From paragraph to Essay: Concluding paragraphs, Essay outlining, review, & writing practice Logical division of ideas
Chapter 5 – Chronological Order; Process Essays, Thesis statements, transition signals, review, Writing practice
Chapter 6 – Cause & Effect Essays: Block & chain organization

授業方法

Students will work individually and in pairs and groups doing writing, revising, and assessment activities. Afterward, student compositions will be used as a catalyst for sharing thoughts and feelings in English. Use of word processing software and the Internet for research purposes will be encouraged.
