授業の目的・内容

This is a course for students interested in writing fiction and creative non-fiction. The aim is to develop and increase confidence in creative writing abilities. The course focuses on creative writing techniques, using exercises and examples from published stories: how to develop plot, point of view, and voice; how to describe people and places and atmosphere; how to write narrative that moves along, and natural dialogue / interior monologue; how to convey character, emotion, conflict, motive and action; how to catch the reader's attention and hold it, bringing the story alive. These skills increase the effectiveness not only of creative writing, but also of academic writing and of whatever kind of writing students might need to do in later life and work. In addition to in-class exercises and homework assignments, each student will work throughout the course on an individual project - a story or memoir - and share this work with the other members of the class. There will be time and opportunity to rewrite, learning progressively more about how to self-edit and revise.
