授業の目的・内容

This course aims at developing the ability of students to write effectively at the university level. We will emphasise writing sentences and paragraphs clearly and expressively. We will also examine the writing process, beginning with gathering ideas, outlining, creating a first draft, editing and revision, creating a second draft, final revision and producing a final copy. Students will work together in brainstorming and peer-editing activities, and will learn how to make critical comments on the work of others and incorporate such comments into their own writing. There will also be a focus on improving grammar in order to express ideas clearly in writing. If time allows, we will also look at patterns of essay organisation.
Critical reading will also be an element of the course, with the focus on reading academic or journalistic writing and keeping a record of your response and a note of useful vocabulary and writing techniques discovered. Journal entries should be written in pen, with the emphasis on putting ideas in writing, not on getting everything perfect.
Students will also be expected to keep a vocabulary notebook, listing words and phrases studied together in class and other words and phrases they may wish to add. Each word or phrase should be accompanied by a definition written in the student's own words, along with at least one sample sentence using the word or phrase appropriately.
