授業の目的・内容

The primary aim of the course is to improve your skills in academic writing. The course will focus on three main areas: proper sentence construction, the structure of various types of paragraphs (e.g., narrative, descriptive, process, comparative, etc.), and the organization and writing of essays. Important secondary objectives will include using word processing software, and writing meaningfully and creatively.

Chapter 5: Process essay thesis statements, chronological order transition signals, review and writing practice
Chapter 5: Applying what you have learned, reading 1 and reading 2
Chapter 6: Cause-and-effect essays, block and chain organization
Chapter 6: Cause-and-effect signal words and phrases, review and writing practice
Chapter 6: Applying what you have learned, reading, questions, suggestions
Chapter 7: Comparison/contrast essays, point by point and block organization, signal words
Chapter 7: Review and writing practice, applying what you have learned
Chapter 8: Paraphrasing and summary, plagiarism, using paraphrases as support
Chapter 8: Summarizing, review
10 Chapter 9: Organization of argumentative essays, point-by-point versus block style
11 Chapter 9: Introductory paragraph, thesis statement, review and writing practice
12 Chapter 9: Application, readings 1 - 4, preparation for final paper
13 Term Paper: Preparation for final paper, discussion of appendices A and E
14 Summing up
15 Independent Research

授業方法

Students will work individually and in pairs and groups doing writing, revising, and assessment activities. Afterward, student compositions will be used as a catalyst for sharing thoughts and feelings in English. Use of word processing software and the Internet for research purposes will be encouraged.

成績評価の方法

Attendance, Punctuality, and Homework = 30% Completion of class work, Participation = 40% Term Paper = 30%
