授業の目的・内容

This course aims to develop academic writing proficiency through a wide variety of activities, which will include the writing and discussion of short academic statements and exercises in class.

3 Academic vocabulary expansion II: which words are preferable?
4 Academic vocabulary expansion III: keywords for academic writing
5 Opening sentences and opening paragraphs: defining positions
6 Extending and developing an essay without repetition
7 Concluding paragraphs
8 Punctuation
9 Proofreading and revision of essays
10 Comparison of academic (dissertations/articles/books) and non-academic prose forms (journalism/review articles/news and current affairs) I: writing summaries
11 Comparison of academic (dissertations/articles/books) and non-academic prose forms (journalism/review articles/news and current affairs) II: learning from other writers
12 Common academic writing errors and their revision
13 How to create effective quotations and footnotes
14 Advanced techniques for including academic detail
15 Revision and further clarification of course

授業方法

Each class will involve short writing exercises, and each student will be required to participate by briefly answering questions relating to the exercises.

成績評価の方法

レポート:60%
2 shorter writing assignments:40%
Students will be required to submit an end of semester paper (of between 1200 – 1500 words), which reflects the issues considered throughout the course. Students will also be required to complete several shorter writing assignments.
