授業概要

This course will offer First Year students an introduction to studying English at University level. In order to help students adjust to the demands of their new environment, the first part of the course will examine the habits students have developed in their study of English at High School. The second part of the course will introduce students to contemporary English through the use of film, music, and TV news. In the concluding part of the course, students will look at the importance of context both for understanding, and as determinant of, the language of a given situation.

到達目標

The goal of the course is to help students become more proactive in their study and in their use of English, so students are expected to play an active role in the collaborative tasks which will be assigned in class and to participate in class discussions. The major assignment of the course is the preparation of a film, the goal of which is to help students build confidence in their ability to use English to accomplish a complex and creative task.

授業方法

The class will be taught in English. There will be three email assignments, and a practical assignment concerned with university life: how to borrow a book from the library using the Glim/Opac computer system. Students will watch videos concerned with the history of libraries, and with the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, and will be expected to do group work assignments on each of these topics. Each student will also take part in a one-on-one interview with the teacher. Much of the class time will be devoted to the preparation of the 'Tour of Gakushuin' film. Students will work in groups, planning, writing and then performing in their own film. Each student will be expected to take an active part in each component of the film-makng process.

準備学習

There will be three email assignments. Students will be expected to write at least 300 words in each of these emails. Preparation for the film will also require students to work outside class times.

授業概要

This is a first-year English communication course focusing on development of fluency and confidence in all four skills, as well as strategies for independent language study, and use of technology in language learning.

到達目標

This course introduces a range of independent study strategies for developing fluency in speaking, writing, and reading. Students keep a website portfolio of their work, including summaries of graded readers, vocabulary notes, and PowerPoint of a research project on a city abroad.

授業方法

The teacher will provide models and demonstrations of all writing and speaking assignments.
At least half of each class will be devoted to random pair discussion using headphones.

準備学習

Read (at least) one graded reader book per week (1-2 hours)
Write summary and impressions about the book (30 minutes)
Add vocabulary notes to website (30 minutes)

第1学期(学期末試験):20%(City Abroad PowerPoint w/voiceover)
中間テスト:10%(Graded reader talk)
レポート:20%(12 summaries of graded readers)
Attendance:50%
At the end of the semester, students will submit their website portfolio for evaluation.
