授業概要

In this class, students will use a textbook and handouts to improve their English abilities. The focus of
the class will be to boost students' understanding and use of English grammar, vocabulary, and
conversation strategies, as well as common areas of English not often practiced by students. Students
will engage in activities alone, in pairs, and in groups. All four language areas (i.e., speaking, listening,
reading, and writing) will be targeted.

In this course, students will (1) gain confidence in speaking English, (2) learn and practice functional conversational grammar patterns, (3) develop listening skills for general understanding and conversational purposes, (4) learn additional reading and writing techniques, and (5) develop useful life skills.

The class will definitely cover Units 7-12. It is expected that 8 handouts will also be covered.

授業方法

Classes will not be taught lecture style. Because this is a language class, students MUST speak up in
class. Students cannot only sit and listen. They must try to extend their English abilities. Students will
be expected to bring all class materials (i.e., textbook, handouts, dictionary) to each lesson, as the
teacher will guide the students through the textbook and handouts.

準備学習

Download and print Download Handouts (approx. 10 mins.).
Complete several workbook pages for each unit (approx. 15 mins. each.).
Do a research and writing assignment in the fall semester (approx. 2 hours).

成績評価の方法

平常点(出席、クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):10%(Participation)
Punctuality:10%(Students must come to class on time.)
Download Handouts:10%(Students will be responsible for downloading and bringing the handouts to class.)
Homework:20%(Homework includes workbook pages as well as other assignments to be done outside of class.)
Conversation Strategy Quiz:20%(This quiz is to be done by students in pairs at the end of the fall semester.)
Attendance:10%(Students will receive 1 point for every class they attend.)
Students will be expected to take responsibility for many aspects of their learning.
