This course will cover all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening, with an emphasis on oral communication. Students will be expected to take an active part in the class and use English not only with the teacher, but also with their fellow students. There will be pair work or group work every lesson, and groups will perform a short skit in English at the end of both semesters. The textbook will be supplemented with worksheets, discussions, quizzes and songs.

This course aims to give students the opportunity to make practical use of the English they learned at school. It is hoped that students will gain fluency and confidence in their ability to communicate in English and that they will improve their ability to understand the gist of spoken English. Writing exercises will help students to think in English and to communicate their ideas freely.

All classes will be conducted in English. Students will work in pairs or groups of four or five and will be expected to participate actively in the classes. The teacher will give as much individual attention to each student as possible, but the students themselves should help and support each other. A willingness to communicate in English is very important, and there is no need for students to practise their Japanese during class time.

Students will be expected to check vocabulary in their dictionaries before the class. There will be regular quizzes as well as the mini tests and end of semester test, so students should be sure to review the relevant units in their textbook. Because students will perform a skit at the end of the semester, they should also make time to practise their skits outside class time.

20%(Students will take a listening and writing test.)
20%(Students will take a listening and writing test.)
20%(There will be a mini test halfway through each semester.)
20%(Students will be evaluated on their participation in a skit at the end of each semester.)
10%(There will be regular chapter quizzes.)
10%(Students will be evaluated on their attendance and participation in the classes.)
A positive approach is necessary to ensure success in this course.
