本コースでは、アメリカおよび世界各地から発信されたThe New York Timesの署名入り記事を読みます。使用するテキストには①環境問題、②ジェンダー、③食と健康、④子どもと教育、⑤テクノロジー、の各分野における興味深いニュースを扱った12本の記事が収められています。これら長めの記事を３週間で１本読むというペースで授業を進めます。一つのレッスンが終了するごとに新出単語の小テストがあります。また、このテキストには、それぞれの記事をナチュラル・スピードで全文録音したCDが２枚添付されているので、予習時に何度もよく聞いて耳慣らしをしてきてもらい、授業ではCDと同じ速度で音読したり、シャドーイングの練習をしたりします。期末試験にはリスニングの問題が出題されます。さらに各学期末には、その学期中に読んだ記事の中から１本を選び、それについてレポートを書いて提出してもらいます。

1. 英字新聞を各段落の要旨を把握しながら読むことができる。
2. 英字新聞で使用頻度の高い語彙や表現、及びパラグラフの展開の仕方を習得する。
3. 記事の内容を批判的に読み、自分なりの意見や考えをまとめて発表できるようになる。

各回の内容は上記の通りですが、進捗状況により多少前後する場合があります。

毎回の授業は、その週に必要な準備学習が十分してあることを前提に進めます。主に新聞記事を読み進めながら、段落ごとに解説をしたり、内容に関する質問に答えてもらう形で進めます。音読やシャドーイングも重視します。

毎週の授業を受けるのに必要な予習時間は２時間を目安として下さい。まず、記事を読みながら未知の単語に印を付け、最後まで読んで概要を把握してから辞書で単語の意味を調べます。次に再読しながら内容を把握して、長めの文及び構造が複雑で意味がよくわからない文は、意味のまとまりごとに区切ってノートに和訳してみます。その作業が終わったら、添付のCDを使って文字に頼らずに耳だけでも内容が理解できるようになるまで何度もリスニングの練習をして下さい。そのほか、テキストの練習問題を解いたり、小テストの準備をすることも必要です。復習時には音読やシャドーイングの練習もすると効果的です。

第１学期（学期末試験）：25％（読解・リスニング）

第２学期（学年末試験）：25％（読解・リスニング）

レポート：20％（内容・書式・引用の仕方・参考文献）

小テスト：20％（単語テスト）

平常点（クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等）：10％（出席・授業参加態度）

成績は上記の評価項目と配分で総合的に評価します。
