授業概要

Students will develop their reading and writing skills. To assist in both areas, they will study academic vocabulary and expressions. They will learn and practice different ways of reading, researching, organizing, and writing information and ideas. They will learn how to self edit and peer edit their work. The underlying principle of the course is to help students become more proficient in academic language use. Students will be required to practice these skills in class and on their own.

Development of effective reading skills, expansion of vocabulary and language usage, training in producing a variety of short writing in an academic style, and acquisition of study skills to help students become more proficient in academic language use.

2 Writing:
- Outlining, essay planning, writing a descriptive paragraph
- How to use Grammarly

Effective reading skills, getting meaning from context
3 Writing:
Brainstorming, outlining, essay planning
Reading:
Reading for/identifying details
4 Writing:
Essay structure, supporting main idea with examples, writing responses
Reading:
Taking notes while reading

Writing opinions with support and examples

Skimming, using glosses and footnotes to aid comprehension

Paragraph writing – unity/cohesion, writing a personal letter

授業方法

Class time will be used to introduce reading and writing skills and strategies. Students will work individually and in pairs or groups. Classroom activities and exercises will be interactive and involve discussion and communication in English among students.

準備学習

Writing descriptions, opinions, and responses to weekly readings (30 mins - 45 mins)
Vocabulary study (10 mins)
Completing exercises from textbook (15 mins)
Rereading text passages for comprehension (20 mins)

成績評価の方法

小テスト:30%(Vocabulary, reading and writing review)
平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):10%(Teacher, student self-evaluation, and in-class English usage)
Paragraph Writing:40%(Paragraph writing assignments (descriptions, opinions, responses, opinions with support and examples))
Final Essay:20%(5-paragraph expository essay)
No late homework assignments or essays will be accepted.
