授業概要

In this class, students will learn basic academic English skills, vocabulary, and broad perspectives that are needed to study, examine, discuss, and make effective presentations on various aspects of Japanese culture. They will also learn how to gather textual materials written and spoken in English about Japanese culture on the Internet, and the processes to put them together to make meaningful presentations for audiences interested in social science audiences.

到達目標

In this course, students will develop basic abilities to integrate four areas of language study (i.e., reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and to make effective presentations in the fields of social sciences. This course will also enable students to become aware of diverse aspects of Japanese cultures.

Self-introduction

- Self-Introduction with a good posture and eye contact
HW: Prepare and practice a 1-minute self-introduction
2 Using voice effectively (tone, volume, intonation)
Presentation structure: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion
Brainstorming for Short Presentation 1: Traditional entertainment, customs or food
Task/Assignments:
- 1-minute self-introduction speeches with good posture and eye contact in small groups, changing the tone and volume
- Group discussion for topics
- Start looking for resources and visuals in class
HW: Finding a topic and visuals (print out or ready to show on the screen in class)
3 Short presentation 1-1 (3-minute speech with visuals)
Structure of presentation (Introduction, body, and closing)
Guidelines for acknowledging the source of the visuals
Task/Assignments:
- Sharing the topics in support groups
- Writing a script and selecting images
HW: Finish writing the script and practice the presentation

授業方法

Flipped learning (watching videos and reading in advance), Pair-work, Group-work

準備学習

There will be a fair amount of homework (e.g., Internet search, reading the textbook and watching a short DVD, and preparing presentation materials) each week. The time required to complete homework and preparation depend on individuals (minimum of 60 minutes).

成績評価の方法

平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):20%(On-going assessment of the material preparation and presentation practice, class participation, and contribution to the support groups. )
TWO 3 to 5-minute speeches/presentations:40%(Delivery 30% Content 10% (one individual + one pair/group))
In class activities:20%(In class activities, particularly as an audience providing feedback and asking questions)
5 to 6-minute individual presentation :20%(Delivery 10% Content 10%)
Regular attendance, active participation in class activities, and working on assignments in a timely fashion are essential to the successful completion of this course.
