授業概要

In this class, students will learn academic English skills, knowledge, and broad perspectives that are needed to study, examine, discuss, and make effective presentations on various spheres of Japanese society. The students will also learn the ways to gather textual materials in written and spoken English about Japanese society on the Internet, and the processes to put them together to make an academic presentation for social science audiences.

到達目標

This course will help students develop intermediate abilities to integrate four areas of language study (i.e., reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and to make effective presentations in the fields of social science research. This course will also allow students to understand and examine diverse aspects of Japanese society.

2 Short speeches, using the PREP method
Research and presentation in the area of social sciences: basic ingredients of research presentation and paper
3 Writing a “Script”
“Trad Japan” and other resources (e.g., library, internet, and news media) for content to discuss Japanese society
4 “Readers’ Theater” format and the concept of “voice”
Citation and quote in academic presentations and papers
5 Presentation (I): Team presentation on Japanese society
6 The “Ingredients of Academic Presentation” (#1): “Purpose” and “Significance” of the study and “Evidence”
7 The “Ingredients of Academic Presentation” (#2): “Problem” and “the Need to study”
8 The “Poster Session” format: merits of doing poster sessions
The “Game” of socializing in the conference and the importance of social networking
9 Presentation (II): Team presentation on Japanese society
10 Guest Speaker on the topic of “English pronunciations and intonations”
11 Forming a team and deciding on the outline of presentation content for final presentation
12 Final presentation preparation
Writing a script and polishing analysis and arguments
13 Final Presentations Day 1(First half)
14 Final Presentations Day 2(Second half)
15 Course Review, Feedback, and Reflection
There may be schedule changes due to guest speaker(s) availability and room availability for video-taping.

授業方法

Active learning methods, including pair work, group work, online research and discussion, activities in class using the laptop PC, and individual consultation.

準備学習

There will be a fair amount of homework (e.g., Internet search, reading the textbook and watching a short DVD, and preparing presentation materials) each week. The time required to complete homework and the preparation time each week depends on individuals (minimum of 60 minutes).

成績評価の方法

平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):15%(One-minute paper (filled at the end of each class) and class activities, including group work, providing feedback, and asking questions)
Short Presentations:40%(Two 3 to 5-minute speeches/presentations (pair and/or team works involved). Delivery 30% and Content 10%)
Presentation Development:15%(Research, material preparation, practice for presentations, and participation in discussions, including on-line discussions)
Final Presentation:30%(Six to eight-minute team presentation, followed by a Q&A session, in which individual performance is evaluated. Delivery 10%, Content 10%, and Other aspects (e.g., giving feedback) 10%)
Regular attendance, active participation in class activities, and working on assignments in a timely fashion are essential to the successful completion of this course.
