授業概要

This class will be conducted ONLY in English. The course will provide an insight into various aspects of political and historical issues through popular music. Your level of English is not a big issue - what truly matters is how you use your tools, in other words, what you know. You will not be required to translate the text, but to explain what it says (i.e. vocabulary) in your own words. You will be evaluated mostly through class participation. Preparation and participation are a MUST - failing to meet such demands will lead to a negative assessment. Thus, thorough preparation will be required. Regular quizzes will be held to evaluate your readiness. Your willingness to learn and to take part in class is what truly counts.

到達目標

Hopefully, students will be able to explain and use their own English by the end of the year, by not simply 'translating' the text, but by explaining the vocabulary or paragraphs using their own English vocabulary, which will be the main focus of the course.

授業方法

We will watch videos and analyze / discuss song lyrics during class. Students will be asked to do either individual or group presentations after the summer vacation.

準備学習

Read and be able to explain the vocabulary in English of the set passage from the textbook before coming to class (approx. 40 mins). Do not underestimate this process, as it will be strictly connected to your evaluation.

成績評価の方法

レポート:20%(Automated translation (which is obvious in the eyes of a teacher) as well as plagiarism will be strictly checked. You will be required to write an essay after finishing each chapter.)
平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):70%(Class preparation counts the most - looking up the vocabulary during class is out of the question. Please take this seriouly - no preparation is also obvious in the eye of a teacher, and this will lead to poor evaluation.)
Quizzes and Term Examinations:10%(You will have a quiz at the end of each class. Term examinations will include some extra questions. These tests will be used to evaluate your participation in class.)
Be prepared, do not waste other students' time during class and deprive your classmates of their right to education.
