授業概要

In this class, students will use a textbook and handouts to improve their English abilities. The focus of the class will be to boost students' understanding and use of English grammar, vocabulary, and conversation strategies, as well as common areas of English not often practiced by students. Students will engage in activities alone, in pairs, and in groups. All four language areas (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) will be targeted.

到達目標

In this course, students will (1) gain confidence in speaking English, (2) learn and practice functional conversational grammar patterns, (3) develop listening skills for general understanding and conversational purposes, (4) learn additional reading and writing techniques, and (5) develop useful life skills.

The class will attempt to cover all chapters in the textbook. It is expected that 8 handouts will also be covered, but we will try for sure to cover 7 handouts.

授業方法

Classes will not be taught lecture style. Because this is a language class, students MUST speak up in class. Students cannot only sit and listen. They must try to extend their English abilities. Students will be expected to bring all class materials (i.e., textbook, handouts, dictionary) to each lesson, as the teacher will guide the students through the textbook and handouts.

準備学習

Download and print Download Handouts. Occasionally complete before class (approx. 15 mins.).
Practice conversation strategies with a classmate or classmates (approx. 15 mins.).
Review TOEIC strategies (approx. 15 mins.).

成績評価の方法

第1学期(学期末試験):10%
第2学期(学年末試験):10%
平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):30%(Participation. This includes bringing ALL class material. It also means completing and bringing homework to class on the day it is due. No homework means participation is reduced/impossible.)
Punctuality:10%(Students must come to class on time.)
Special Assignments:30%(These assignments are a speaking quizzes and probably a written research assignment second semester.)
Attendance:10%(Students will receive 1 point for every class attended.)
Students will be expected to take responsibility for many aspects of their learning. Bringing class materials is very important. If students fail to bring materials (for example, textbook, Download Handouts, dictionary) too many times during the year, they will not be given credit for the class. Also, cell phones are not to be looked at, used, or be visible during class time.
