授業概要

This class utilizes a cooperative learning approach, so students are expected to participate actively in pair work, group activities and group presentations. The topics for discussion and presentations will come from the textbook, Impact Issues 2, which focuses on helping students express opinions in English. Vocabulary activities as well as homework assignments will further enhance English-language skills and provide opportunities for individual research on topics of interest.

到達目標

The aim of the course is to further develop students’ skills in English communication. The course will include a variety of topics that encourage students to become more comfortable expressing and supporting their opinions. The focus will be on improving listening and speaking skills with some writing and reading skills practice. Students will also be expected to do extensive reading outside class and share what they have read in class.

The above schedule may be adjusted depending on the level of proficiency of the class. Students are also expected to borrow books from the library in the Foreign Language Centre Self-Study Room, in the Central Building.

授業方法

Classroom activities will be conducted in pair and group work so that students can interact with and learn from each other. Projects and other out-of-class work are required and will be presented in class.

準備学習

Students should read through each chapter before class and study and review unknown and new vocabulary for quizzes (approx. 30 minutes). Students will need to prepare and practice for presentations (approx. 1 to 1-1/2 hours/week).

成績評価の方法

小テスト:10%
平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):50%
Presentations:40%(Includes writing homework.)
Students need to bring a notebook (or loose-leaf paper) and pencil for taking notes. Students must also purchase and bring vocabulary cards (単語帳 – approximately 2cm x 3 cm) to class.
