授業概要

The aim of this class is to refine the students' English skills, with a special emphasis on practicing and improving sophisticated English conversation skills in a variety of situations. This class will allow the students many opportunities to speak English. This is a fun and exciting class and if the students study hard, they will gradually improve their English speaking, reading, writing and vocabulary skills.

到達目標

The aim of this course is to improve the students speaking skills and strategies through exposure to language and numerous opportunities to practice it. Goal and achievement are based on lessons with can-do statements enabling the students to confirm their language progress. Essential vocabulary and idiom building will lead the students to a more natural fluency. The diligent student will greatly improve their speaking skills through this course of studies.

授業計画

1 Introduction to the course of studies, regarding class policy, grading and textbook use. Ice breaking activities to allow the students to get to know each other and the teacher.
2 Functional English based around the communication goals related to small talk. Idiom building and model dialogs distinguishing between formal and informal introductions.
3 Greeting a visitor to Japan. Vocabulary building exercises and discussion of tourist attractions. Idiomatic English expressing tiredness and energy.
4 Conversational, listening and reading exercises based on describing and interesting experience. Writing about a thrilling, strange or frightening experience. Food idiom building and conversation practice.
5 Communication goals revolving around the theme of movies and entertainment. Functional English skills examining apologizing for being late.
6 Describing and expressing preferences for movie genres. Discussing and recommending movies. Writing practice on the issues discussed. Idiom building and practice based on the theme of relationships.
7 Discussion regarding violence in movies and its potential effects on people, especially young people. Various listening exercises and vocabulary building
8 Conversation themes based on staying in hotels. How to check into a hotel. Vocabulary and idiom building around this topic. Leaving and taking telephone messages. Requesting housekeeping. Choosing a hotel and explaining the reasons for your choice. Related writing activities.
9 Discussion centred around the topic of cars and driving. Describing a car accident. Reporting a problem with a car. Idiom practice. idiomatic expressions to do with relationships Related writing activities.
10 Functional English on renting a car Discussing the good and bad points of driving. Listen exercises and relevant vocabulary building.
11 Conversation themes regarding personal care and beauty Listening and pronunciation practice.
12 Requests and functional English building for activities at a salon. Reading and discussion activities on hotel spas. Writing practice.
13 Discussing appearance Evaluating the pros and cons of trying to improve one’s appearance. Ways of discussing beauty Listening practice, reading activities and vocabulary work.
14 Defining and discussing the notion of beauty. Focus on idiom building regarding work and study Listening and conversation strategies.
15 Final summation and conclusions to the first semester’s study Final evaluation preparations

17 Topic of discussion and conversation based around eating well, good food and staying in shape. Idiom practice regarding expressing strong desires.
18 Talking about and discussing food passions. Making and refusing invitations to dine. Listening and vocabulary exercises based on the lessons study

19 Communication goals revolves around the students being able to successfully explain their lifestyles and any changes they would like to make to it. Related idiom building and vocabulary work.
20 Describing local cuisine to visitors of Japan. Talking about likes and dislikes regarding food. Building of vocabulary based on nutritional terminology Idiom and vocabulary building exercises. Writing practice.
21 The theme for the next few lessons will be built around describing personality. Getting to know someone’s likes and dislikes. Studying various idioms through model dialogs.
22 Functional English building up the students ability to describe personality. Examining birth order on personality traits. Vocabulary and idiom building and writing exercises.
23 The theme for the next few lessons will be based on discussion and conversations concerning the arts. Essential vocabulary building and idiomatic expressions will be worked on.
24 Recommending art places to visit like museums. Asking about and describing art objects. Talking about artistic talent and expressing opinions on such talent. Idiomatic expression studies and writing practice.
25 The theme for the next few lessons will be based around computers and the technological age with several communication goals based around these topics.
26 Troubleshooting computer problems, building vocabulary on computer parts. Recommending deals when shopping for technology items. Writing about the internet - evaluating its benefits and problems
27 Describing the personal use of computers. The social impact of the internet and various social networking platforms. Vocabulary building exercises.
28 The last few lessons of the fall semester will be based around the theme of ethics and values.
29 Discussing ethical choices, such as returning someone else’s property. Expression personal values and discussing kindness and honesty.
30 Summing up and review of the lessons covered in the second semester of studies. Final evaluations
This class will attempt to cover a wide range of topics, but progress will depend on the pace of the lessons governed by the students progress.

授業方法

This class depends on a high-level of student participation. Students will engage in lots of pair work and group work discussions and problem solving activities presented through content based material. A communicative approach to learning and studying English will be adopted in the classroom. Paramount to this is the students engaging with all aspects of classroom activities.
