―Conversation Strategies―

In this class, students will use a textbook and handouts to improve their English abilities. The focus of
the class will be to boost students' understanding and use of English grammar, vocabulary, and
conversation strategies, as well as common areas of English not often practiced by students. Students
will engage in activities alone, in pairs, and in groups. All four language areas (i.e., speaking, listening,
reading, and writing) will be targeted.

In this course, students will (1) gain confidence in speaking English, (2) learn and practice functional conversational grammar patterns, (3) develop listening skills for general understanding and conversational purposes, (4) learn additional reading and writing techniques, and (5) develop useful life skills.

The class will definitely cover Units 1-6. It is expected that 8 handouts will also be covered.

Classes will not be taught lecture style. Because this is a language class, students MUST speak up in
class. Students cannot only sit and listen. They must try to extend their English abilities. Students will
be expected to bring all class materials (i.e., textbook, handouts, dictionary) to each lesson, as the
teacher will guide the students through the textbook and handouts.

Download and print Download Handouts (approx. 10 mins.).
Complete several workbook pages for each unit (approx. 15 mins. each.).

第１学期（学期末試験）：10％

第２学期（学年末試験）：10％

平常点（クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等）：30％（Participation. This means bringing ALL class materials to class each lesson. It also includes doing homework and bringing completed homework to class on the day it is due. No homework means participation is reduced/impossible.）

Punctuality：10％（Students must come to class on time.）

Attendance：10％（Students will receive 1 point for each class they attend.）

Oral Conversation Strategy Quiz：30％（This quiz is to be done by students in pairs at the end of the fall semester. Practice for this speaking test is essential.）

Students will be expected to take responsibility for many aspects of their learning. Bringing class
materials is very important. If students fail to bring materials (for example, textbook, Download
Handouts, dictionary) too many times during the year, they will not be given credit for the class. Also,
cell phones are not to be looked at, used, or be visible during class time.
