授業概要

This course is based on 4 recent films that explore the subject of growing up. In the Spring Term, students will study about the power of music to change people's lives. 'Mr. Holland's Opus' follows the career of a high school music teacher from 1965-1995 in a provincial American town, his influence on the lives of his students and the changes in American society. 'Music of the Heart' is based on a true story of a woman who started a successful violin program for underprivileged students in East Harlem, New York. In The Fall Term, students will look at the modern day issue of divorce and single parenthood. Firstly,‘About a Boy’ which looks at present day single families in UK, followed by 'Mrs. Doubtfire' which takes a humorous look at the challenge of parenting a broken family in America. In addition to weekly listening practice and dialogue analysis, students will be studying a variety of contemporary English idioms as well as having extensive conversation practice in the form of pair work and information gap exercises.

This course will focus on students' comprehension skills, especially their listening and speaking abilities. Each class will provide ample opportunity to listen to and speak in English. In addition, students will be learning and actively using a lot of new vocabulary during the year, as well as having the opportunity to practice their writing skills with regular semester reports. Finally, the themes of these films should introduce students to values and ideas which will help their understanding of foreign culture and society.

In order for students to understand the story of the film, regular attendance is required.

授業方法

As a preview of the lesson content, students will have a pair-work discussion and prepare any required vocabulary. Students will then watch 2 ten minute video segments each of which will be followed by a series of comprehension questions which they will need to ask and answer using that selected vocabulary. This will be followed by a review and follow-up exercises, time permitting.

準備学習

Regular weekly homework assignments will be set, which must be finished before the start of the lesson by the student him/herself. Students will be required to prepare vocabulary for the next lesson (30 min.) and review the previous class (30 min.) .

40% - 4 Printed Reports for each film:30%(Attendance and Punctuality)
Students who are absent for more than 3 times in a single semester will be unable to receive any credit for this course.

教科書

Though there is no textbook for this class, students are required to bring a B4/A4 folder/binder to class every week in order to keep the photocopies that will be handed out by the teacher at the beginning of each semester.

Regular attendance, completion of all homework assignments and a willingness to use English in the classroom are essential for students to pass this course. Repeated absences, a failure to do homework or submit assignments on time will make it impossible to receive any credit. In addition, students will be evaluated on their effort and performance throughout the year, not their English level at the beginning of the class.
