本コースでは本文の長さが800～1200語程度の比較的長めの文章を読む訓練を行います。使用するテキストは①Express Yourself、②The Grand Tour、③The Human Condition の３つのユニットに分かれ、それぞれ４つの章から成ります。各章の構成は 1. Pre-reading, 2. Reading Passage, 3. First Reading, 4. New Words in Context, 5. Second Reading, 6. Reading Strategies, 7. Summarizing, 8. Beyond the Text, 9. Cloze, 10. Point of View と盛りだくさんで、ただ単に本文を読んで内容を理解するだけではなく、速読による本文全体の流れと概要の把握、文脈の中における単語やイディオム、様々な比喩表現の意味の確認、各段落の要旨の把握と要約などの活動を行うことによって、総合的な読解力の向上を目指します。各章のレッスンが終了するごとに、ボキャブラリーを中心とした小テストがあります。また各学期末には、その学期中に読んだ一つの章に関するレポートを提出してもらいます。

1. 長めの英文でも臆せずに、速読で文章全体の流れと概要を把握することができるようになる。
2. 単語やイディオムを文脈の中で捉えることで、効率的に語彙を増やすことができるようになる。
3. パラグラフの構造や展開の仕方を学ぶことで、各段落の要旨を容易に理解することができるようになる。

各回の授業内容は上記の通りですが、進捗状況により多少前後する場合があります。

授業は毎回、十分な準備学習がしてあることを前提に行われます。主にテキストの読解問題の答え合わせと解説を中心に進めますので、しっかり予習をして答えを準備してくる必要があります。また、授業ではテキスト添付のCDを使ってリスニングと音読の練習もします。

毎回の授業を受けるのに必要な予習時間は２時間を目安にして下さい。各章の本文が長めなので、最初から未知の単語にぶつかるたびに辞書を引きながら読むというやり方では、途中で挫折してしまうかもしれません。テキストの First Reading の練習問題の順番に従って、まず一度、文章全体に目を通して概要を把握する作業から始めてください。次に、語彙のセクションで単語やイディオムの問題を解いて、それぞれの意味をよく理解してから再度本文を読み直し、この時には未知の単語は辞書を引いて確認します。Second Reading のセクションの各種練習問題を解くことで本文の内容が理解できるようになっていますから、すべての問題に答えるようにしてください。小テストのある週には、その準備も必要になります。

第１学期（学期末試験）：25％（読解・リスニング）

第２学期（学年末試験）：25％（読解・リスニング）

レポート：20％（内容・書式・引用の仕方・参考文献）

小テスト：20％（単語テスト）

平常点（クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等）：10％（出席・授業参加態度）

上記の評価項目と配分により、総合的に評価します。
