The aim of this course is to develop listening and speaking skills through the medium of rock and pop music. Students will learn about pop culture by listening to famous pop songs and reading and discussing about the background of the singer and the meaning of the song.

Objective 1: Would you like to have a better understanding of the spoken English you hear in movies and pop songs? Students will learn to recognize “sound changes’ (sounds that occur in English but not in the Japanese language). Students will listen to and practice the sounds using lyrics of famous pop songs.
Objective 2: An additional aim of this course will be to give students an opportunity to learn about pop culture by listening to a lecture about the meaning of the song and the background of the singer. Pop and rock songs contain many interesting and important topics about life and society. Students will discuss their reactions to the lyrics of the song and express their ideas and opinions about various topics introduced in the songs. We will also watch a DVD of the artist’s performance.

The teaching method is based on active, cooperative learning. Students will be expected to actively participate in a variety of reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities including individualized work, pair work, group work, and short presentations.

Read the relevant unit in text before class and complete assignments. (approx. 30 - 60 minutes).

Final Exam：33％

Each of the following will count for part of your final grade:
(1) Taking an active part in discussion and class activities, (2) Regular weekly attendance, and completion of weekly class assignments and (3) Mid Term and Final Test. Both MT and FT are oral (speaking) exams
