In this class we will study English by watching short scenes from an English-language film each week, and by carrying out activities related to the content and language of each scene. The main aims of this class are to improve listening skills (both intensive and extensive), and to build a functional English vocabulary, with a special focus on authentic, idiomatic English. Short writing activities will help students develop their ability to narrate and sequence events, and describe situations. Finally, the constant use of spoken English in class by all students will help develop oral skills and confidence.

Students completing this course will acquire an understanding of authentic, current idiomatic English, especially phrasal verbs. Students will also develop their listening skills, both extensive (listening for gist) and intensive (listening for detail and nuance). In addition, students will familiarize themselves with the key aspects of pronunciation, namely stress, weak sounds, elision and linking, and will have the opportunity to practice and improve their spoken English through role-play and other activities. Students who apply themselves will thus acquire a set of language skills that will enable them to use English in authentic settings, at a more advanced level.

Further information about the class schedule, materials, tasks, worksheets and evaluation methods will be provided in the first two weeks.

Most of the class activities are designed for small groups of three or four students, and are based on worksheets provided by the teacher. Students will be expected to concentrate, and to show a positive and supportive attitude when communicating in English with their group members. Homework assignments (short writing, grammar and/or vocabulary tasks) will be set each week, and must be completed. Students should also review worksheets and script excerpts regularly, to consolidate their vocabulary.
