授業概要

This class is aimed at motivated students who wish to develop their reading ability. There will be a strong focus on vocabulary acquisition.

We will read a recent, award-winning work of non-fiction that deals with the environment. Students should therefore have an interest in environmental issues and the natural world. Although the book focuses on the environment and science, it was written by a journalist, not a scientist, and is aimed at the general reader.

We will spend two classes on each chapter. In the first class we will read the opening sections of the chapter together, checking for comprehension of vocabulary and context. Students will continue reading the chapter for homework, with a worksheet for guidance. In the second class we will complete the chapter. Students will be given comprehension tasks to check understanding of vocabulary and context, following which we will have a class discussion on issues related to the chapter. All students will be expected to take part in this discussion.

Since we will read one chapter every two weeks, students must be prepared to do a considerable amount of reading outside class. Students will need to use a good dictionary while reading. At the end of the course, students will be required to write a short report in English based on issues related to the text.

到達目標

This class will allow students to develop their reading skills (especially reading comprehension, reading speed and vocabulary recognition). It will also help students increase their general knowledge regarding the environment, the natural world and current affairs. Finally, regular, focused discussions will give students the opportunity to improve their speaking skills, and build confidence and fluency.

授業方法

Students will be kept informed of the reading schedule, and reading requirements, on a weekly basis. In-class reading work will be intensive, and focused closely on the text. Students will be required to respond to questions about the text, and display their understanding. The weekly reading will form the basis for class discussions in which students will be expected to participate actively, displaying their understanding of the issues raised in the text. Frequent, short quizzes will help students consolidate their understanding further.
