授業概要

This course is based on the learning method known as Extensive Reading (or tadoku 多読). Students select books that interest them, at a level they can read comfortably, from a library of graded readers written especially for language learners. Reading quickly, without using a dictionary, students will gradually become more confident and fluent readers of English. Students will talk about their weekly reading in a small discussion group at the beginning of each class. This will help develop speaking skills and confidence. Students will also write a short report on each book they read, to develop and consolidate writing skills. Reading, speaking and writing activities will be supplemented by occasional listening and vocabulary activities.

This class is open to all students who want to develop their English reading skills, regardless of ability.

到達目標

Students completing this course will develop their English reading ability, notably reading speed and comprehension skills, and they will find that they can read English much more comfortably than they could before taking the course. Students will also develop speaking skills (such as narration and description), as well as writing skills. The large amount of reading will also help deepen understanding of English grammar and syntax.

授業方法

Each class will be divided into three stages.

Stage 1: Group Discussion
In the first stage, students will report to other students in their group, introducing and discussing the book(s) they have read, and asking questions about the books the other group members have read.

Stage 2: Silent Reading
Although students will be required to do most of their reading outside the classroom, during this part of the class students will have the chance to read their chosen book quietly, at their own pace.

Stage 3: Activity or Feedback
In this section of the class, the teacher will introduce new books or books on a particular theme, or provide vocabulary, speaking or writing feedback. Alternatively, we will carry out a storytelling activity, or watch a short video related to a book in the graded reader library.

A short period of time at the end of each class will be devoted to submitting reading diaries, and borrowing and returning books. Time will also be available to ask questions, and to consult with the teacher about books.

Outside class, students will be expected to read regularly and quickly, and to write a short report on every book they read. These reports should be kept in a reading diary that must be brought to class every two weeks for checking.

準備学習

Students will do most of their reading outside the classroom. Students should therefore be prepared to set aside enough time each week to allow them to finish reading one or more books (approx. 30-90 mins). Students will also write a short report on each book (approx. 10-15 mins).

成績評価の方法

平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):10%
Reading achievement:50%
Group discussion :20%

教科書

The books required for this class should be borrowed from the graded reader library in the Foreign Language Centre Self-Study Room. Students will be introduced to this graded reader collection, and the borrowing procedure, in the first two weeks. All students taking this class will be guided in choosing suitable reading material, at the appropriate level. Further details will be provided at the beginning of the course.
