授業概要

Topic-based TOEIC / IELTS/ TOEFL is a new course. The course has three goals:
1. Students will learn about the kinds of speaking questions on each test. Then, they will practice. Students may record answers for each type of question. I will check your answers and give feedback.
2. Students will learn about various topics that come up frequently on the tests. For example, a frequent topic for the IELTS Tasks 1-3 is 'Family'. The TOEIC speaking test often includes answering business telephone calls.
3. Students will study the purpose of the tests and the environment for which they were created. For example,
TOEIC Speaking - International Business
IELTS Speaking - Everyday topics leading to discussion questions
TOEFL Speaking - American universities (campus life, academic lectures)

Students with the aim of working in Japanese global businesses or foreign companies will benefit from this course.

I can also create special programs for each student if they need to take a test quickly.

授業方法

The teaching mode is 'English in English'. The teaching method is a seminar style.
1. The teacher will present various background information about the test environment. (ex. TOEIC's organizing enviroment is global business)
2. The teacher will explain each kind of question and give strategies for answering.
3. Students are expected to add useful information to the course, especially if they have taken any of the tests and/or have lived abroad.
4. Students will be required to work in pairs or groups often. Also, students may be asked to perform other tasks such as evaluate each other and present certain parts of the lesson.
5. There will be a loop of practice tests, and then recording a question type, then getting feedback from me, and then trying to do better the next time.

準備学習

Students will access www.englishvocabularyexercises.com and study one group of 10 academic words every week. (Approx. 30 minutes per week)
Students will prepare answers for each question type to be recorded. (Range of 15 minutes to 1 hour. Depends on the student.)

成績評価の方法

平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):100%(Includes attendance, participation, recorded test answers, and Academic Wordlist completion and semester tests.)
The course is not for beginners. Students must have an intermediate (中級) level of English for speaking. or better.
Students will be graded on a 'whole student' basis. Scores will be given for attendance, participation, organization, assignments, and evaluations of each kind of speaking question.

教科書

There is no set textbook for this course. Much of the information for each kind of test question and how to do it is online. I will source students to various URLs through the course. Students will also create a file of paper-based information on each kind of test question.

参考文献

I recommend an electronic dictionary with English - Japanese, Japanese- English, and English - English dictionary options as well as a pronunciation feature.

履修上の注意

履修者数制限あり。
第1回目の授業に必ず出席のこと。

その他

There many online resources for the kinds of test questions we will study. Please start searching and reading about the kinds of questions before the course.
Students must have a smartphone with an application such as AudioMemos for recording their test answers.
