授業概要

In this course we will study the world of musicals and films. We will look at the way musicals have developed over the years from the Hollywood period to present day. We will look at the way the contents of musicals reflect the society of the period and the way they deal with fantasy and reality. The course will involve assessing videos of musicals, reading original texts and scripts and looking at elements of story, rhythm and staging in various productions. Among the numerous, productions we will study will be such works as Cats, Sunday in the Park with George, Evita, Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera.

Our asim is to look at the world of entertainment and its development over time. We will see the way performance, drama and musical theatre influence our lives and mirror our society.

Each week videos of musicals and films relative to the theme will be the basis of our approach.

授業方法

This course will be a very practical course and there will be extensive use of video and DVD. Performance will be the center of this course and our studies will be based on musicals in performance in the theatre. Class discussion, group work and individual projects will be used extensively.

Review of work done in previous class.
Preparation for next class which could be individual or group.

成績評価の方法

レポート:40%
平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):60%
Students will be evaluated on effort to better themselves, participation, attendance and course work.

Handouts will be provided by the teacher each week.
