―Media, art, and culture―

This course aims to give students many opportunities to engage in English discussions, tasks, and projects on a range of stimulating topics related to different media and art, considered in their cultural contexts. In class, students will listen to music, watch clips from movies and television programmes, view art works, and be introduced to a range of other cultural products that they will be expected to engage with and discuss. In doing so, students will develop their confidence to communicate in English and express their own points of view, while also working collaboratively with others.
　
In discussing different media and art forms, such as popular music, the focus will not be just on language, but also important cultural issues surrounding the artwork.
　
The course will focus in particular on music, film, television, painting, poetry, and contemporary art.
　
　

The course aims to:
　
1) Develop students' ability to confidently express themselves in English
2) Improve students' ability to work in groups
3) Deepen understanding of various media and art forms
4) Enhance awareness and understanding of important cultural issues
5) Give students the vocabulary necessary to discuss high-level concepts
6) Develop students' ability to think critically

The course will focus on student discussions, with some time given to reading, listening, and watching movies.

Students will be expected to spend about 30 minutes each week keeping a diary of their ideas, as well as a record of new vocabulary learned.

小テスト：5％

平常点（クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等）：50％

Projects：25％

Attendance is a major part of the evaluation criteria, but the projects and end of year report will also be important.

Materials will be provided in class

履修者数制限あり。
