授業概要

This class is aimed at motivated students who have fairly high English ability, and is designed to help develop listening, discussion, reading and writing skills. Students taking this class should already have taken a number of Advanced (上級), Special-Advanced (上級特), and/or Intensive Course classes, or should have experience of academic study overseas.

Each week we will watch a scene or scenes from a particular film, or related films, and, using a worksheet that places each film in its cultural and historical context, we will discuss our reaction to the film(s). Occasional background readings will help students develop a deeper understanding of the films, their contexts, and film theory. Students will be required to view further scenes outside class, and to write a short reaction to each film in a weekly film journal. A final short report will provide further writing practice.

Taken together, these films will form a broad, historical survey of international film, and by the end of the course students should find that they have a deeper understanding of films and film history, and of the cultural contexts of international cinema.

到達目標

Through watching, studying and discussing a wide range of films from America, Europe and Asia, students will develop a deeper understanding of international culture. In terms of language development, students will have the opportunity to improve their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. More specifically, by end of the course students should have developed the ability to summarize, describe and narrate, both orally and in writing. Extensive viewing and listening on a weekly basis should ensure that students improve their overall listening competence.

授業方法

Class worksheets and preliminary readings from the class textbook will provide students with background and guidance to the films viewed in each class. After viewing each film, or section of film, we will discuss the film and its contexts. In the case of English-language films, we will also discuss linguistic aspects, such as idiomatic expressions, pronunciation and nuance. Students will be expected to watch further scenes outside the class for homework, and to write about the films they have watched, and their reaction to these films, in a weekly film journal. The instructor will read and respond to these journals at regular intervals.
