授業概要

This course aims to help students improve their written English through introducing the fundamentals of paragraph writing and then progressing through to preliminary essay writing. The course will also emphasize the following areas:
 
•Grammar and technique
•Punctuation
•Editing and proofreading
•Research skills
 
Please note that the syllabus may be adjusted slightly depending on language levels and student numbers.

到達目標

By the end of this course, students will have learned fundamental strategies in paragraph and mini-essay writing and different writing styles. Classes will also focus on the basis for sound writing skills: grammar, punctuation, paragraph construction, and building essays through research and planning. The emphasis of this class is on writing, but students will also be encouraged to verbally discuss their research and interests in class.

1 Introduction to course outlines and goals. Paired introductions. Writing evaluation.
2 Chapter 1. Formats, simple sentences, phrases, subject-verb agreement, nouns and verbs.
3 Chapter 1. Simple paragraph writing.
4 Chapter 2. Compound nouns and sentences, commas.
5 Chapter 2. Narrative paragraphs.
6 Chapter 3. Paragraph organization, topic and supporting sentences.
7 Chapter 3. Adjectives and adverbs, outlining.
8 Chapter 4. Logical division of ideas, paragraph unity and coherence.
9 Chapter 4. Synonyms, comma splices.
10 Chapter 5. Process paragraphs.
11 Chapter 5. Phrasal verbs.
12 Research proposal for essay.
13 Writing draft for essay.
14 Review of coursework.
15 Supplementary study.

授業方法

Classes will comprise a mixture of group discussions, projects, in-class writing exercises and teacher instruction. Students will be expected to conduct research and complete other written assignments as homework. Students will also be required to demonstrate an active level of participation in class through questions, group discussions and peer evaluation.

準備学習

Students will be required to read sections of the textbook prior to coming to class (approximately 30 minutes). Students will have homework for some classes (approximately 30 minutes).

成績評価の方法

レポート:60%(Apart from in-class writing tasks, students will be required to write a small essay at the end of the first semester, and a larger research essay (1200 words) at the end of the second semester. )
小テスト:20%(Students will be given paragraph writing tasks and grammar/vocabulary quizzes in class.)
平常点(クラス参加、グループ作業の成果等):20%(Active participation in class is required.)

「アカデミック・ライティング演習(中級)Ⅰ・Ⅱ」は、英語英米文化学科によってクラス指定が行われる。また、3年生以上の再履修者は4月5日から4月11日までに、他教科免許取得のために履修を希望する者は3月24日から4月4日までに英語英米文化学科事務室に相談すること。
