公開パネルディスカッション「文化と格差：戦後日本と英国を考える」

  

「文化資本を持っていれば幸せになれるのか！？文化って何？資本って何？大学に行けばこれを手に入れられる？でも、分断も、格差も、そして外国との距離も感じる ーー 僕らが生きる日本は、なにか内向きになっているように感じる。このままでいいのか、これまでも、これからも・・・。」コロナ禍の2021年に開催した公開パネルディスカッションでは、若者たちの疑問に応えて、非正規雇用の拡大、教育改革の混迷によって変容する働き方・学び方について、議論しました。1年半を経過して、ますます先が見えない不安定な時代を生きているという感覚があります。硝子の階段の途上で ーー 自分は何処にいて、そして何処に向かっているのか ・・・。 パネルディスカッションには、イギリス階級調査を行った マイク サヴェジ ロンドン大学教授、アンディ マイルズ マンチェスター大学教授、日本でも文化階級調査に取り組む 相澤 真一 上智大学准教授、磯 直樹 東京藝術大学特任講師をお招きし、若者たちの声にお応えいただきました。

Class in Comparative Historical Perspective: UK and Japan

  

Rising inequalities in the West over the past 25 years have firmly reinstated class as a topic of major importance. While everywhere the COVID-19 pandemic helped to expose the vulnerability of less well-off groups, in the UK the intervention to mitigate effects of the COVID-19 pandemic largely benefitted the more affluent. Subsequently, a cost of living crisis, resulting from Brexit and the War in Ukraine, has sponsored a wave of strike action across the economy, bringing class-based tensions into even sharper focus. Meanwhile, in Japan there are concerns that a formerly egalitarian social structure has undergone a shift towards a ‘gap society’, although the extent to which this is objectively the case is contested. In neither the case of Japan or the UK is there a clear relationship between the class-based economic differences and subjective identities. This raises the question of how to capture, analyse and compare the broader societal and political effects of class both within and between nations. In this workshop we address this question by considering the recent application of multidimensional theories of class in the Bourdieusian tradition alongside the historical approach established by EP Thompson.

「生まれながらにして裕福、生まれながらにして貧困？ ーー 僕らが生きる日本は、なにか見えない壁に分断されているように感じる。このままでいいのか、これまでも、これからも・・・。」学生たち、若者らから、そのような声が聞こえてきます。 イギリスでは、社会学者らがウェブを利用して階級調査を行い、16万人の調査回答者が見たイギリス階級社会の現実が明らかになりました。格差は広がり、かつての「上流・中流・労働者階級」の３分類は崩壊し、新たな「７つの階級」に組み変わったといわれます。 「日本は、違う」と思うでしょう。でも、非正規雇用の拡大、教育改革の混迷によって、若者たちをめぐる働き方・学び方は大きく変容し、「頑張っても報われない」という感覚が、徐々に若者たちの間に広まりつつあります。見えない壁のこちらと向こう ーー 自分は何処にいて、そして何処に向かっているのか ・・・。 パネルディスカッションには、イギリス階級調査を行ったマイク・ サヴェジ ロンドン大学教授、日本の働き方・学び方の変容に早くから警鐘を鳴らしてきた、橘木俊詔 京都大学名誉教授、苅谷剛彦 オクスフォード大学教授をお招きし、若者たちの声にお応えいただきました。

国際シンポジウム Culture, Class, Connection

  

In the last two decades there has been a major revitalization of class analysis in social sciences in the UK and Continental Europe, incorporating a multidimensional framework, recognizing the significance of the cultural aspects of class alongside the economic dimensions. Questions have been raised about the extent to which this revitalization of class analysis may be applied to Japanese society, and whether it adequately conceptualizes the relationship between cultural, social and economic drivers in an era of intensifying inequality, and its capacity to deal with intersectional inequalities. This workshop is part of a networking project that is the major contribution to reflect on these issues through a focus on Japanese society and comparisons with the UK. It will bring together leading scholars researching Japan and the UK to reflect on the salience of class in both nations, and the adequacy of current framings of class analysis to address them.

公開講演会「文化と階級：EP トムソン再考」

  

「格差社会の国際的研究」をテーマとした日英共同研究グループ主催のコンファレンスのひとつで、著書『7つの階級-英国階級調査』が翻訳されたマイク・サヴィジと、EPトムソンの階級形成論に影響を受けたアンドリュー・ゴードンを迎え、日本の関連する研究者を加えて、「階級・文化・EPトムソン」について論じる講演会を行いました。一般の方を含めてどなたでも参加して頂けるよう、英語の講演には日本語通訳が付きました。
